Algiers — Kyiv. Economic relations between Algeria and Ukraine have traditionally been viewed through the lens of agricultural trade, grain and raw materials. Yet recent industrial projects and contacts between companies from the two countries point to another possible model of cooperation — one built around engineering, industrial equipment, automation and manufacturing.

The issue is not simply the export of finished products. A more structured form of cooperation could emerge if Ukrainian companies provide technology, engineering expertise and equipment, while Algerian partners contribute production capacity, market access and the ability to implement projects locally.

The first industrial projects are already emerging

Several Ukrainian companies are increasingly looking at Algeria as a market for industrial cooperation. One example is UkrMashBud, which in 2026 stepped up contacts with Algerian industrial organisations and explored opportunities for Ukrainian manufacturers to participate in local projects.

Another example is Orion.Group, a Ukrainian engineering and industrial installation company involved in the Sahra’el Djazair project and working within an international industrial environment that includes GEA Process Engineering.

Such projects illustrate a potentially important role for Ukrainian companies in Algeria: not simply as equipment suppliers, but as engineering, installation and technical partners in complex industrial projects.

S-Engineering shows that the model is already possible

Another relevant example is Ukrainian company S-Engineering, which specialises in electrical engineering, automation and industrial systems.

The company has experience in Algeria, including the development and manufacture of electrical equipment for oil-pipeline infrastructure. Its activities cover engineering design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, personnel training and maintenance.

This type of integrated approach — from engineering design to equipment commissioning — could become one of the most practical areas for Ukrainian-Algerian industrial cooperation.

Algeria is seeking greater industrial integration

For Algeria, industrial integration and the localisation of production are becoming increasingly important. This trend is visible at industrial events such as ALGEST 2026, where manufacturers, equipment suppliers, engineering firms, subcontractors and companies specialising in automation, digitalisation and Industry 4.0 and 5.0 are increasingly represented.

This creates potential opportunities for Ukrainian companies with expertise in mechanical engineering, automation, electrical systems, industrial software and specialised equipment manufacturing.

For Ukrainian businesses, the Algerian market could therefore offer more than a destination for equipment exports. It could become a platform for long-term industrial partnerships.

Machine building could become an entry point

Ukrainian machine-building companies possess capabilities that can potentially be adapted to the Algerian market: specialised machinery, industrial equipment, electrical systems, production automation, equipment modernisation and maintenance.

For Algeria, cooperation with Ukrainian manufacturers could provide access to engineering expertise and technological solutions. For Ukrainian companies, it could offer an entry into the North African market not only through exports, but through local partnerships.

Over time, this could take the form of joint ventures, manufacturing cooperation or partial localisation of Ukrainian technologies in Algeria.

A two-way model of cooperation

The potential relationship does not have to operate solely in the direction of Ukraine to Algeria.

Algerian companies could also become part of Ukrainian production chains, supplying selected components or materials, or participating in manufacturing and processing projects. Ukrainian companies, in turn, could provide technologies, equipment and engineering solutions.

Such a model would gradually move bilateral relations beyond conventional trade towards industrial cooperation.

Mining offers another potential area

Mining is another sector where opportunities could emerge. Algeria is seeking not only to develop its mineral resources, but also to expand processing activities and retain a greater share of added value domestically.

Ukraine has substantial experience in mining and metallurgy, mineral processing and industrial automation. Combining Algeria’s resource base with Ukrainian engineering and technological expertise could create new forms of cooperation.

This could be particularly relevant for projects requiring more than equipment deliveries — from process engineering and plant design to commissioning and technical support.

Industry 4.0 opens a less visible but potentially significant market

Another area is industrial digitalisation.

Algerian companies are modernising production facilities, increasing demand for automated control systems, industrial electronics, equipment monitoring, energy-efficiency solutions and digital production management.

For Ukrainian companies, this could create opportunities to export not simply a product, but technological expertise. In many cases, engineering, programming, systems integration and after-sales support can be as important as the equipment itself.

From supplier to industrial partner

This may be where the most significant change in the bilateral economic model could occur.

Ukrainian companies may find it difficult to compete across all segments of the Algerian market solely on the basis of the price of finished products. Their potential advantage may instead lie in the ability to develop customised solutions, adapt equipment to specific industrial requirements and support projects throughout their life cycle.

For Algerian businesses, this means access to engineering capabilities. For Ukrainian companies, it means the possibility of establishing a longer-term presence in the market through industrial partnerships.

Algeria could also offer opportunities for Ukraine

Industrial cooperation can work in both directions.

Algeria has a large domestic market, substantial energy and agricultural sectors, and an ongoing interest in developing local manufacturing. This creates opportunities for Ukrainian companies not only to export, but also to establish local partnerships.

At the same time, Algerian companies could gain access to Ukrainian technologies, engineering solutions and manufacturing expertise.

Under such a model, bilateral relations would no longer be limited to a buyer-seller relationship.

Cooperation still needs to be built

Despite these examples, it would be premature to speak of an established Ukrainian-Algerian industrial partnership. Most of the potential areas still require concrete partners, financing, feasibility studies and adaptation of technologies to local conditions.

What the first engineering and industrial projects demonstrate, however, is that the potential relationship extends beyond traditional trade.

The next step for businesses in both countries could therefore be to identify not simply products to export or import, but specific industrial challenges that can be addressed jointly.

For Ukraine, this means an opportunity to deploy its engineering and technological capabilities in the North African market. For Algeria, it offers a potential channel for accessing technology and industrial expertise to strengthen its domestic production base.

If this approach develops in practice, Ukrainian-Algerian economic relations could gradually move from a “product-to-market” model towards a “technology–production–partnership” model.
